After a successful nationwide theatrical run that sparked conversation across faith, science, and culture, The Story of Everything is now available to purchase on Amazon Prime Video!
Inspired by Stephen C. Meyer’s bestselling book Return of the God Hypothesis, the cinematic documentary invites audiences to explore one of humanity’s oldest—and most consequential—questions:
Does the evidence point to a universe shaped solely by blind chance, or is there evidence of purpose and design?
Synopsis
The Story of Everything is a science-driven cinematic exploration of the cosmos that reveals the hidden hand behind our universe. The documentary explores ground-breaking discoveries in cosmology, physics, and molecular biology that have reignited debate surrounding the origins of life and the universe.
From the precise laws that govern the stars, to the intricate patterns found in every living cell, this film traces evidence of intentional design throughout nature. Whether examining distant star-forming clouds or the spiral structure of DNA, we discover a consistent signature woven into the fabric of existence.
Featuring interviews with leading voices in science and philosophy, the film is a thought-provoking exploration of the origins debate, presenting compelling evidence that challenges long-held assumptions about whether material processes alone can fully explain reality.
Praised for its cinematic scope and accessible storytelling, The Story of Everything has resonated with audiences seeking a fresh perspective on questions regarding science, faith, and the search for meaning.
Review
The Story of Everything blends science, philosophy, and intelligent design arguments to explore whether physics, cosmology, and molecular biology indicate purpose in the universe.
The documentary features a wide range of scientists, philosophers, and thinkers, including Nobel laureates. Almost all them have PhDs, and many come from renowned universities like Cambridge, Oxford, Princeton, and Biola. These experts collectively present a multidisciplinary case for intelligent design, drawing on biology, physics, cosmology, philosophy, and theology.
How does anything exist?
This is an important question.
A century ago, scientists experienced a boom in their ability to observe, research, and evaluate new ideas. Many were confident that these advances would soon enable them to prove there was no need for God to explain the universe, life, or consciousness.
However, recent discoveries – particularly regarding the universe’s astonishing complexity – have instead pushed science closer to the probability that the universe and everything in it was intelligently designed. For one thing, it’s scientifically impossible for life to come from non-life, as some used to believe.
It does indeed seem that everything within living beings, on earth, and in space is best explained by a designing intelligence rather than unguided natural physical processes (materialism). Look at the whole world around you, and it points to a designer.
You don’t need to believe in God, either, to see evidence of design everywhere. The intelligent design argument doesn’t automatically point to a specific religion or God the Creator. Likewise, in The Story of Everything, viewers are left to decide for themselves.
So, depending on your worldview, it might very well be God – or it could be aliens, or something else.
For me, this documentary gives a solid foundation for believing what the Bible says is true about how things exist, how things are alive, and how the universe came to be.
The Beginning
There was a time when the universe didn’t exist, and then all of a sudden it did. The fact that scientists came to realize there had to be a beginning was a huge blow to the way atheists saw the universe as having just always been there.
The universe is expanding, with everything moving away from us. That’s been seen through telescopes, with definitive observational evidence. You’ve probably heard of the term “redshift,” which is the phenomenon where light from an astronomical object is stretched to longer wavelengths, making it appear redder, indicating the object is moving away from the observer.
If the sphere of the universe is expanding outward, work your way backwards, and the only logical conclusion you can reach is that it had a central starting point. Not to mention, if the universe began with a Big Bang, there should be lingering background radiation – residual energy in the microwave range in all directions. Guess what, there is!
Science Then and Now
The Story of Everything gives students the tools to think beyond the theories proposed in 19th-century science, some of which now seem rather childlike, considering all of the scientific and technological advancements we’ve seen since then.
As new scientific discoveries are made, scientists are often forced to change their minds and rethink their theories. This has even happened with the greatest of them like Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking. This documentary takes viewers back through the history of these scientists and their theories.
We will continue to gain more insight as long as science isn’t used to push ideology. Scientists must look at everything with an open mind, as personal biases can destroy discoveries or the right understanding of the evidence.
Sometimes you have to think outside the box. It can blow your mind when you consider that God can exist eternally, outside of space and time itself. The universe is so complex, it’s hard for us to comprehend even the most basic ideas of how it works. Imagine how much farther the God of the universe must be outside our limited understanding.
Big and Small
The Story of Everything discusses all the ways in which mathematics and science have revealed that we’re living in a vast finely-tuned universe that could never have appeared randomly. Then they take us in for a closer look at the small details…
Nothing creates itself by accident, so the intelligent design theory is inherently logical and scientific. When you examine the evidence, it seems obvious! The more we learn, the less “chance” makes sense.
For instance, DNA is a language, like a computer code, with a fixed set of characters that combine in sequences to form a structured system of instructions. In fact, DNA is such a complicated code that it can be read both forward and backward! So there must be some mathematical genius behind it. I like to think of DNA as God’s source code – His procedures for the development, functioning, and growth of all living organisms.
I mean, has there ever been any evidence of specified and complex information like a coding system simply appearing out of a jumble of random pieces? No! It would be like a LEGO set assembling itself, or a computer program writing itself. Even the best software program can merely do what it’s been programmed to do. The only thing that can produce anything like information, language, or codes is an intelligent mind.
At this point in the documentary, it’s cool to see computer scientists and biologists coming together on this!
Conclusion
The Story of Everything is a fascinating documentary of professional quality and high production value. The creative cinematography and beautiful imagery make it a pleasure to watch what might otherwise be a topic that’s difficult to dramatize or visualize. This film will keep you on the edge of your seat with awe and wonder. All of the scientists who were interviewed exhibit an infectious passion for the subject.
This documentary is suitable for teens and adults. The only problem is that it conveys so much information in a rapid-fire manner that you really have to watch it more than once. Some of the stuff that went over my head in the first viewing made more sense the second time around. The downloadable study guides help, too.
This film is a great incentive to help young people, especially those wanting to enter scientific fields, to start searching for answers by using critical thinking with an open mind and not sticking to preconceived notions. Again, I’d recommend that you download the resources that go with the film, as they will help immensely. –Teri
