Season One takes viewers back to the original context of The Lord’s Prayer, helping viewers experience the prayer in the way Jesus’ followers would have heard it.

About the Host

Brad Gray, host of THE SACRED THREAD, is a national speaker, published author, ordained minister, and teaching pastor. He has a business management degree from Cornerstone University, a Master of Divinity from Western Theological Seminary, and a graduate certificate in biblical history and geography from Jerusalem University College. He pastored at Solomon’s Porch Church in Jenison, MI, and Central Wesleyan Church in Holland, MI. He now lives in Nashville, TN, with his wife, Shallon, and their four children. Brad serves as the President & CEO of Walking The Text.

Review

THE SACRED THREAD is awesome! Not just the content but the cinematography. It’s as slick as anything on the History Channel, and even better. It was shot on location in Biblical lands, with immersive storytelling and stunning scenery. Brad Gray amazes me, too – what other pastor do you know who scuba dives and skydives?! He really goes above and beyond to help us understand what he’s talking about. In doing so, he makes learning about the Bible an exciting adventure.

Season One of the Biblical docuseries uniquely focuses on The Lord’s Prayer, each episode taking a single line and breaking it down according to the historical, cultural, geographical, visual, linguistic, and literary context of the day. He explains why Jesus would have chosen certain words, along with background info on what His original audience would have thought of when He spoke those particular words. It’s connections like these that can bind humanity together across the centuries.

During the course of this series, Brad Gray interviews quite a few Biblical scholars and experts in the field, who provide additional insights. These include: N.T. Wright, Dr. Randall Smith, Dr. Cyndi Parker, Dr. Michael Guillen, Dr. Carman Joy Imes, Jonathan Pennington, Dr. Shively Smith, and more. They’re all very knowledgeable, and help bring The Lord’s Prayer to life by explaining the deeper context behind the scenes. I especially liked hearing Yehuda, the desert survivalist, share his first-hand experiences.

Each episode of THE SACRED THREAD is about a half hour long, and the minutes go by quickly. The series is so interesting that I watched two or more episodes at a time. I’ve recited The Lord’s Prayer plenty of times without considering its full spiritual depth, but from now on it will be more meaningful to me. Sometimes it would seem like the host was going off on a tangent, but then he’d bring it back to the bold vision of God’s kingdom hidden within the words. I’d love to see Brad Gray do Psalm 23 the same way!

THE SACRED THREAD is visually compelling and spiritually grounded without feeling academic or impersonal. Every fact-filled episode opens a clear window into the Biblical world. One of my favorite parts was the science lesson on how royal blue dye was derived from sea snails! Also, the description of manna from heaven! Not to mention the phenomenon behind a burning bush! If you love learning about history and the Bible, this is definitely a series that you can binge watch! –Teri
