Review
In many homeschooling circles, copywork is a popular and valued practice – especially for those in a Montessori, Classical, or Charlotte Mason environment. If you’re not familiar with the term, copywork is the act of copying high quality writing word-for-word to build literacy. Passages can be drawn from classic literature, famous speeches, poetry, scripture, and historic documents. British educator Charlotte Mason emphasized slow, careful, beautiful writing.
It’s best to choose literary passages or texts that are meaningful to the student. What’s more perfect than the Bible! It connects handwriting practice with purpose, which increases motivation. It uses multi-sensory learning, which accelerates retention. It exposes students to rich, meaningful language rather than random sentences. It naturally teaches punctuation, capitalization, spelling and vocabulary through real text.
The NKJV New Testament Tracing Edition is a wonderful way to combine Bible reading and handwriting practice. It’s great for students to trace Bible passages word‑for‑word to strengthen handwriting, reinforce language skills, and improve concentration while internalizing biblical truths. By actively engaging with the Bible, tracing the words helps you to stay focused. The act of tracing combines the benefits of copywork with the spiritual practice of Scripture meditation to deepen your knowledge of God’s Word.
The New King James Version (NKJV) is exceptionally good for copywork because it preserves the poetic beauty of the King James Version (KJV), maintaining the original sentence structure and meaning while updating the 17th-century language of the KJV, replacing archaic words like “thee” and “thou” with modern English. The NKJV New Testament Tracing Edition is an excellent tool for teenagers to work on their handwriting. Tracing directly over a model of written work can help teens refine letter formation, spacing, and punctuation. In addition, Scripture tracing strengthens understanding of the verse’s meaning because students are forced to slow down and focus on each word, copying the Bible exactly, which is a great help for memorization.
Copywork for teens shifts from teaching basic mechanics to refining style, stamina, penmanship, and exposure to complex texts. Teens benefit because they’re capable of copying longer, richer, more sophisticated writing – such as the NKJV New Testament – which deepens their mastery of language. Moreover, the topical reading plans (e.g., hope, peace, anxiety) found in the NKJV New Testament Tracing Edition offer personal encouragement and support one’s spiritual development.
I have the classic gray cloth hardcover edition with gold embossing. (It also comes in a Brown Leathersoft edition.) The 8″L x 6.25″W x 1.5″D size is comfortable to hold. The book has an open spine, which means you can see the exposed structure of folded sheets with threads holding them together. This gives it a unique, raw look. With no spine support between the front and back cover, the book lays completely flat when opened. This makes for ease of tracing. Plus, the quality is better than spiral binding.
The text is printed in a large italic font, which is more flowing than print, but more structured than cursive script, making it easy to read and trace the words. The gray lettering with bold black chapter headings and verse numbers is readable as is, even if you don’t trace over it. The NKJV New Testament Tracing Edition is ideal for anyone who likes calligraphy or has an artistic bent. You can use it to trace the entire New Testament, or trace certain verses that stand out to you. Decorate the margins and turn it into your own illuminated manuscript!
Overall, this traceable New Testament is a practical addition to your Bible study tools, and it will be a beautiful keepsake when you’re done! This Bible has a presentation page and it comes in a nice box, so it would also be a thoughtful gift for someone.
