A Kids’ Bible Dictionary . . . That’s Not Just for Kids!
The Explorer Bible Dictionary for Kids, by Holman Bible Publishers, is a kid‑friendly reference book that explains 750+ common Bible terms using simple definitions and colorful pictures. It’s made to go with the award-winning CSB Explorer Bible for Kids, but it also works well as a standalone educational resource for home, school, or church.
The Explorer Bible Dictionary for Kids is written in concise, clear language, with accompanying visual aids to help young readers understand the people, places, events, objects, and ideas they encounter in Scripture. The 224‑page hardcover (approximately 8.7″ x 11.2″) is packed with full‑color illustrations, photos, maps, charts, and historic reconstructions to help kids visualize important Biblical concepts.
This book is meant to grow with kids as they grow in their faith, giving them a reliable reference tool that will make learning about the Bible fun for years to come. The Explorer Bible Dictionary for Kids was created for kids ages 6-12, but I’d say it’s also great for teenagers. The engaging layout that makes it accessible for children can be just as helpful for teens and adults who want an easy-to-use reference.
While the Explorer Bible Dictionary for Kids is child-friendly, it’s not childish. The short definitions and eye-catching images are useful to increase comprehension for reluctant readers, visual learners, and homeschoolers of all ages. Pick any page randomly, and you’re sure to find an interesting Bible fact that no one else in your family knows. Even adults will find much to glean from the vibrant, fact-filled pages.
“For example, have you ever wondered what the word phylactery means, or what Solomon’s temple looked like? Ever thought about what kinds of insects are in the Bible, or how many Marys are in the Bible? Now, you can find the answers to these questions and many more in the Explorer Bible Dictionary for Kids” (p. VII).
If you just want to learn what a particular word means, this kids’ Bible dictionary is perfect. Pronunciation is included for difficult words. Entries include KJV versions of words if they differ from the CSB version. The illustrations can help anyone get a better grasp on context, and new believers will appreciate the simple explanations. If you want to refer back to the source, each entry lists corresponding Bible verses.
As a quick reference, the Explorer Bible Dictionary for Kids is easier to use and less overwhelming than an academic dictionary. I’d describe it as an alphabetical reference book of fun Bible facts, because the way the pages are designed, it doesn’t really look like a dictionary. I even found a few words that aren’t in true alphabetical order; e.g., letter (epistle) is listed before leper and leprosy, oops!
Overall, the Explorer Bible Dictionary for Kids is a book of fascinating Bible knowledge that you can browse through and explore at your own pace. It contains geographical and archaeological segments, special sections on “Birds of the Bible,” “Foods of the Bible,” “Insects of the Bible,” “Musical Instruments of the Bible,” “Tools of the Bible,” “Transportation in the Bible,” “Bible Weights and Measures,” and much more.
Personally, I love the color block layout and all of the informative details included in this dictionary. The durable hard cover, quality binding, and sturdy paper will last a long time, and readers of all ages will enjoy learning about the Bible from this book. The Explorer Bible Dictionary for Kids is ideal for a Christian school, church, or homeschool library.

P.S. If you’re considering the companion Bible, the CSB is one of my favorite translations. It captures the Bible’s original meaning without sacrificing clarity. The optimal blend of accuracy and readability makes it a trustworthy, easy-to-understand Bible. The Explorer Bible Dictionary for Kids helps expand kids’ Bible knowledge and connect them to the things they read about in the Explorer Bible for Kids.
