Synopsis

From the creators of GOD’S NOT DEAD and THE CASE FOR CHRIST, THE LAST SUPPER is a reverent cinematic journey that brings to life the ultimate act of love and sacrifice as seen through the eyes of those who walked alongside Jesus.

This reimagining dramatically depicts the events surrounding Christ’s betrayal while unveiling untold perspectives, offering a deeply human and spiritual exploration of the moments that shaped history and faith.

As twelve disciples gather for their last meal with their beloved teacher, hidden tensions simmer beneath the surface and secrets threaten to unravel their bond, setting the stage for conflict as each man grapples with his own doubts and fears.

Amidst the uncertainty and rising intrigue, the night becomes a test of faith, where loyalty is questioned and trust is on the edge. Yet, through the darkness, a message of hope and redemption emerges, transforming a moment of despair into an inspiring legacy that will echo through the ages.

Review

THE LAST SUPPER is unlike any other Jesus movie I’ve seen. It’s very narrowly focused, as you can guess from the title. It begins suddenly in the middle of Jesus’ ministry, jumps ahead to Palm Sunday, and then into the Upper Room, where Jesus spends a painstaking amount of time washing the apostles’ feet before the Passover dinner.

The focus of this movie is, well, The Last Supper. Think of Leonardo Da Vinci’s famous painting. There are some scenes that take place before The Last Supper, as well as after it, but everything revolves around that one significant event. The underlying theme that’s brought to light is, all are welcome at the table.

The only problem is, anyone who isn’t already familiar with the story will have a hard time trying to figure out what’s going on. I can’t understand what Jesus is saying half the time. I swear, everyone mumbles and whispers in this movie! Much of the two-hour movie is very slow-going, too, which doesn’t help in keeping one’s interest. This movie is visually rich and immersive, though.

THE LAST SUPPER is not exactly Biblically accurate, as things are taken out of context, not in the order that they appear in the Bible, and new scenes are added. It’s like historical fiction where they try to fill in the gaps of what may have happened between major events. But it still tells a Biblically-based story. Although there is one goof early on when someone pushes a leprous beggar’s hand away. No one would have touched him for fear of catching the disease.

The main characters besides Jesus and the Pharisees in this film are Peter, John, and Judas! I was surprised to see how Judas plays such a large part. This movie delves into his character development much more than others. They go behind the scenes to show Judas struggling with his faith and being tormented by Satan, which makes this movie a lot darker than other Christian films. It also portrays Judas as a money grubber, like when he bends down to pick up a lost coin on the ground, so it made more sense why he would have betrayed Jesus for 30 pieces of silver.

The scenes where Satan manifests as a snake and a creepy Gollum-like creature are pretty scary! Satan even tries to trick Peter, but Peter’s faith is strong enough that he doesn’t fall for it – even though Peter does deny that he knew Jesus three times before the rooster crows! Poor Judas fares a lot worse, basically driven to madness. You almost feel sorry for him. But the betrayal is a pivotal moment and someone had to do it, as it was a fulfillment of prophetic scriptures from the Old Testament.

This movie shows Jesus being arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane, and brought before the Sanhedrin for an informal night trial. It skips over Jesus’ interrogation by Pontius Pilate and the crucifixion process, but shows Jesus on the cross and then appearing to Peter and the other disciples after the resurrection.

THE LAST SUPPER movie kind of puts Peter up on a pedestal, and the way it also emphasizes the Eucharist made me feel like it has Catholic overtones. Sure enough, I looked it up and Mauro Borrelli, a Catholic, served as the film’s writer and director. The executive producer is Chris Tomlin, the Grammy-award-winning artist known for his contemporary Christian worship hits “How Great Is Our God” and “Holy is the Lord.”

THE LAST SUPPER is rated PG-13 for violent content (Jesus being beaten and whipped), a suicide (guess who), bloody images (a cut-off ear laying on the ground – gross! – and a brief scene of Jesus on the cross). It’s worth a watch even if just to see a fresh perspective of what may have been going on in Judas’ mind at the time leading up to his betrayal of Jesus.

THE LAST SUPPER was filmed in Morocco. The music was composed by Leo Z (Leonardo De Bernardini). The production companies include Canyon Productions, Pinnacle Peak Pictures, and Grand Canyon University, in association with Great American Pure Flix. This movie is not backed by a major studio, so they are depending on believers getting the word out about this film.
