Synopsis
Carving through the heart of the Promised Land is the Biblical spine of Israel, sometimes referred to as the “Path of the Patriarchs” and officially designated as “Route 60.” A highway of deep historical significance while often the scene of unrest and violence, this 146-mile road of asphalt and concrete begins in Nazareth, Israel’s largest Arab city, and ends in Beersheba, one of Israel’s hi-tech centers.
Running North to South, Route 60 connects ancient Israel with modern Israel, Jews and Christians with Muslims, and Israelis with Palestinians. This trek is far more than a two-lane highway; it is a historic, sacred link to the roots of Judaism and Christianity and the stories of the Old and New Testaments.
Follow world-changing diplomats David Friedman and Mike Pompeo as they venture down this sacred road, treading the very ground Abraham, Jacob, King David, and Jesus once walked. Discover the history, witness the healing, and realize the hope along Route 60, the Biblical Highway.
Review
Route 60: The Biblical Highway is a feature-length documentary directed by Matthew Crouch of . Follow former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Ambassador David Friedman as they travel from city to city along Route 60 in Israel. They take you to many famous places from the Bible, and you get to see what those locations look like today. Amazingly, you also see some places that look like they haven’t changed in thousands of years. The live tour is complemented by visually stunning graphics displaying words from the Bible and re-enactors portraying people from the Bible, as well as archived news footage.
As a fan of Drive-Thru History with Dave Stotts, I was excited to see this documentary. But just so you know, they’re not anything alike! Instead of Dave driving around in a unique vintage vehicle, this time we get to see a formal caravan of shiny black government SUVs with a military Jeep at the front and back. Oh, and here’s a funny thing: during the driving scenes, they play jazzy music! It seemed to me that traditional music from Israel would have been a better choice, but admittedly this was the only chance they had to liven it up.
Instead of a comical, casual guy telling interesting Bible stories at the scenes where those events took place, in this documentary we get to hear two official diplomats talking about various Bible stories and what those Biblical accounts mean to them, interspersed with political events they took part in such as moving the US Embassy to Jerusalem. At times it seems like this documentary is just as much about Pompeo’s exploits with the State Department as it is about Biblical history. You will even see President Trump in some of the video montages!
The part of Route 60: The Biblical Highway that stood out to me the most was seeing the massive towering wall at Rachel’s Tomb, which happens to be right near a security checkpoint between Israeli and Palestinian territories. And they say walls don’t work! So even if this documentary didn’t consist of two statesmen taking us on a tour of Route 60, there’s no way to avoid the impact of politics along the route.
The juxtaposition of ancient and modern is also quite striking when traveling through Israel. I was impressed to see how old-fashioned the city of Jerusalem still is even to this day, like going back in time. It’s really small, too – only one square kilometer in size! Later on, we get to see an aerial view of a modern city with skyscrapers and solar fields.
This documentary is a great opportunity to treat your politically conservative dad or grand-dad to a night out at the movies! Route 60: The Biblical Highway combines the truth of the Bible with actual archeological evidence, and ties it in with recent history.
