When you think of Christian holidays, the first two that come to mind are Christmas and Easter. But there are also many other Christian holidays throughout the year, even if they aren’t as commonly emphasized as Easter or Christmas.
In May 2026, the main Christian holidays are Ascension Day (May 14), Pentecost (May 24), Whit Monday (May 25), and Trinity Sunday (May 31). All but the last one are Christian movable feasts that depend on the date of Easter.
Ascension Day — Thursday, May 14, 2026
Ascension Day commemorates the event described in Luke 24, Mark 16, and Acts 1, where Jesus ascends into heaven 40 days after the Resurrection. Ascension Day is celebrated by many major Christian traditions, including Catholics, Lutherans, Anglicans, Methodists, Moravians, Eastern Orthodox, and Oriental Orthodox churches.
Pentecost — Sunday, May 24, 2026
Pentecost occurs 50 days after Easter, and is often called the “birthday of the Church.” Pentecost commemorates the moment described in Acts 2 when the Holy Spirit descended on the apostles. It marks the beginning of Christian mission — the moment the apostles began preaching to the world. Because it celebrates the Holy Spirit’s empowerment of believers, Pentecost is central to nearly all historic Christian traditions and ranks right behind Easter and Christmas in importance, especially in traditions with a strong liturgical calendar. Pentecost is observed by Catholics, Orthodox, Anglicans, Lutherans, and many other Christian communities. It’s the final, climactic day of the Easter season.
Whit Monday (Pentecost Monday) — Monday, May 25, 2026
Whit Monday (also called Pentecost Monday) is the day after Pentecost. Since Pentecost celebrates the descent of the Holy Spirit, Whit Monday is essentially the continuation of that feast — the second day of celebration in a multi‑day festival. The name “Whit” comes from “White,” referring to the white garments worn by those baptized at Pentecost in early Christianity. Whit Monday is observed mainly by Catholics, Lutherans, Anglicans, and Eastern Orthodox Christians, especially in some European and African countries where it remains a public holiday. This year, Whit Monday falls on the same day as Memorial Day, which honors U.S. military personnel who died in service.
Trinity Sunday — Sunday, May 31, 2026
Trinity Sunday is the only major Christian feast not tied to a specific biblical event, but instead highlights a core doctrine that shapes Christian worship, prayer, and theology. Trinity Sunday is a Christian feast dedicated to celebrating the mystery of the Holy Trinity — Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The feast developed in the early Middle Ages and became universal in the Western Church by the 14th century. It always falls on the Sunday after Pentecost and is observed by Catholic, Anglican, Lutheran, Methodist, Reformed, and many other Protestant traditions. It’s a time to sing hymns emphasizing the Trinity (e.g., Holy, Holy, Holy), and the Nicene Creed is often emphasized because of its Trinitarian structure.
