There are plenty of PC games to keep you spooked this Halloween. Here are a few of our favorite games with Halloween themes that we’d recommend giving a try if you haven’t already played them! We offer you a choice of games in the scary horror genre and games with not-so-scary Halloween themes.

Scary/Horror

Legend of Grimrock

Legend of Grimrock is a fantasy game similar to “Dungeon & Dragons.” You make four characters of your choosing, picking their race (Human, Minotaur, Lizard-man, or Insectoid). You can then decide what class they are (fighter, mage, or rogue), and also what their traits and abilities are (how strong or magical they are, etc.). The combat system is a cross between turn-based and FPS where you walk through dark dungeons fighting skeleton soldiers and beastly creatures, like creepy spiders that sneak up on you! There are also many clever (and sometimes devious) puzzles that you must solve. Oh, and traps, watch out for traps! Mount Grimrock is a den of evil and mystery, home to countless dangers. Will you survive? Not sure of the rating but probably ages 10+.

LIMBO

LIMBO is a dark and somber game in black-and-white tones. The main character is a nameless boy, who is traversing a spooky forest in search of his lost sister. The lighting effects and minimal ambient sounds in this game create an eerie, haunting atmosphere often associated with the horror genre. The shadowy grayscale graphics hide numerous environmental and physical hazards, such as deadly bear traps on the forest floor, and dangerous beasts hiding in the shadows. Watch out for the giant spider. SO CREEPY! There are also mechanical puzzles and traps using machinery, electromagnets, and gravity. This game imparts a deep feeling of loneliness and a sense of always being on edge. LIMBO does have a gore filter that blacks out the screen instead of showing your character’s death, but I still wouldn’t let young kids watch it. The game is scary and it might give them nightmares. LIMBO is rated T for Teens.

Penumbra: Overture

Penumbra: Overture is a first person horror adventure game. It follows the story of Philip, a 30-year-old physicist who receives a mysterious letter from his supposedly dead father. Philip follows a series of clues that lead him to northern Greenland and a mysterious underground compound that’s been abandoned (or is it???). This game emphasizes survival and problem solving instead of mindless violence and gore. Still, Penumbra is loaded with psychological horror that really gets under your skin. It’s a creepy, scary game that will keep you on edge, the unknown lurking behind every corner as you explore ominous and mysterious environments. The constant sense of peril and isolation mean that you shouldn’t play this one unless you’re happy to sleep with the lights on for a while. Penumbra is a horrific experience that will grip players from its opening thrills to its chilling denouement. WARNING: Rated M!

Not-so-Scary

Stardew Valley

Stardew Valley is an open-ended country-life RPG. Spirit’s Eve is a fall festival where the townspeople recognize the spirits within the town and prepare for the winter season. It’s identical to the celebration Halloween in real life. The main attraction is a haunted maze set up around the community center. Many of the townspeople will be carving pumpkins or eating food at the buffet, but most are inside the maze. The town’s children will not be permitted in the maze due to their parents believing the maze is “too scary” for children. A golden pumpkin is given as a reward for finishing the maze. Rated T.

Terraria

Halloween is one of the best times to play Terraria. Halloween is an in-game seasonal event which lasts from around mid-October until around the start of November. During this time, several enemies wear costumes that change their appearance, unique enemies spawn, and new items become available via enemy drops or via purchase. Goodie Bags also drop, offering random Halloween-themed items like costumes and decorative items. Pumpkins grow naturally on grass during Halloween. Rated T.

Plants Vs. Zombies

Plants vs Zombies is a real-time strategy / tower defense game developed by Popcap, in which you will have to protect your garden against invading undead. 14 years later and this game is still awesome. Get ready to soil your plants as a mob of fun-loving zombies is about to invade your home. Use your arsenal of 49 zombie-zapping plants — peashooters, wall-nuts, cherry bombs and more — to mulchify 26 types of zombies before they break down your door. This game is rated E10+ for ages 10 and up.

Minecraft

Minecraft is a special kind of game, one that includes some creepiness. It’s not that the game itself is creepy, but it does feature odd and unnerving moments and characters such as Creepers, Endermen, and Skeletons. There are also a bunch of Minecraft maps that could be considered scary. The game is rated E10+ for everyone ages 10 and up.
