Movie Review: The Forge

The Forge

By Teri O.

THE FORGE tells the story of Isaiah Wright (Aspen Kennedy), a 19-year-old high school graduate who still has a lot of growing up to do. He spends his days casually playing basketball and video games, has no job, no plans, and no idea how to be a man.

Isaiah is challenged by his single mom, Cynthia (Priscilla Shirer), to get serious about life and take some responsibility. Torn between the pull from his friends and the push from his mom, the rebellious teen is finally given an ultimatum – step up or move out.

Isaiah reluctantly gets a job a company called Moore Fitness. Little does he know how much the owner, Joshua Moore (Cameron Arnett), will personally impact his life. It just so happens that his boss is a man of faith, who begins to mentor the directionless young man towards a disciplined and purposeful life. This movie is probably the best depiction of true discipleship ever made.

Propelled by the prayers of his mother along with wise guidance from his new boss and mentor, Isaiah is forced to deal with his past, sacrifice his selfishness, and discover how God might have a greater purpose for him. The film delves into the importance of faith, perseverance, and community in overcoming adversity.

THE FORGE was directed by Alex Kendrick, from a screenplay he co-wrote with his brother Stephen Kendrick. This is the ninth collaboration between the Kendrick Brothers who are known for making first-rate faith-based films.

THE FORGE is actually a spin-off of the Kendrick’s hit WAR ROOM, released in 2015. This film takes place in the same cinematic world as that one. Several characters from WAR ROOM make an appearance in THE FORGE as well, like Miss Clara! Overall, it’s a really great cast!

  • Cameron Arnett as Joshua Moore
  • Priscilla Shirer as Cynthia Wright and Elizabeth Jordan
  • Aspen Kennedy as Isaiah Wright
  • Karen Abercrombie as Miss Clara Williams
  • T.C. Stallings as Tony Jordan

  • Selah Avery as Keisha
  • Justin Sterner as Cody

THE FORGE is a heartfelt story that will resonate with many, especially those who appreciate coming-of-age tales about personal growth and redemption. Isaiah faces numerous challenges and self-doubts, but he finds strength through his faith and the support of his family and friends.

THE FORGE was filmed in Albany, Georgia. There’s a great aerial shot of the town, followed by a shot of Isaiah Wright riding a bike through a busy street in that town. Several scenes of the streets and local shops of Albany can be seen in the movie.

I especially loved the part where the warehouse workers stayed up overnight to get a huge order shipped out on time in the morning. Talk about teamwork! That scene was so inspiring, I left the theater feeling like packing boxes all night!

Even though I already saw THE FORGE when it was in theaters, now that the DVD/Blu-ray is out, I’m going to buy my own copy and watch it again whenever I want to! It’s one of my new favorite movies! BUY THE FORGE ON AMAZON.
