Making Friends in High School When You’re Homeschooled

Do you wonder what it’s like to be homeschooled in high school? Are you worried that there might not be any opportunities for socializing and building friendships like you would have in a traditional high school?

Well, you’ll be happy to know that homeschooled high schoolers can and do make friends and build social connections!

Homeschooled teens often join local homeschool co-ops, where they can meet other students and participate in group activities, sports, and field trips. Extracurricular activities such as music, theater, clubs and sports leagues also offer great chances to meet teens with similar interests. Many homeschool groups hold their own proms and graduation ceremonies, so high schoolers won’t miss out on these fun experiences.

Additionally, many homeschoolers participate in community events, volunteer work, and church or youth groups. These are great ways to meet people with similar interests. Some homeschooling teens even take classes at local colleges or community centers, where they can interact with other students of all ages.

Here are some tips to help you build connections and meet people who share your passions:

  1. Join a Homeschool Group or Co-op: These groups often have regular meetings, field trips, social events and activities where you can meet other homeschoolers.
  2. Take Classes or Workshops: Enroll in extracurricular classes like art, music, sports, or language courses. Community centers, libraries, and local colleges often offer these.
  3. Do Volunteer Work or Community Service: Get involved in local events, volunteer work, or youth groups.
  4. Attend Homeschool Conventions or Events: These gatherings can provide opportunities to connect with other homeschoolers.
  5. Use Online Resources: Many online communities and forums exist for homeschoolers. You can find study groups, virtual classes, social events, and even organize a meetup for homeschoolers in your area.
  6. Pursue Hobbies and Interests: Engage in activities you enjoy, whether it’s crafts, geocaching, sports, martial arts, photography, dance, music, theater, gaming, Dungeons & Dragons, cosplay, or historical reenacting.
  7. Join a Club: Look for a 4H club, book club, computer club, robotics club, STEM club, math club, chess club, or another type of club that meets in your area.
  8. Go to Church: There are many ways to get involved at church such as serving on the AV team, worship band or choir, missions, and homeless outreach.
  9. Participate in Leadership Programs: Many homeschoolers are involved with Turning Point USA, Teen Pact, and HSLDA’s Generation Joshua.
  10. Get a Job: Consider getting a part-time job to get out of the house, meet diverse people, and gain valuable experience.

Making friends in high school can be a rewarding experience even if you’re homeschooled. Just like in traditional schools, the key to making friends as a homeschooler is to seek out social opportunities and engage in activities that you enjoy.

What hobbies or interests do you have that you might want to pursue further as part of a group?
