Dear Readers,
Happy February! I hope that January was a great launch into the new year for you. It’s still cold out and I’m just getting over two long weeks of being sick, ugh! But the good news is, we’re past the Winter hump and getting ready for Spring, not to mention we’re half-way to the end of this school year, so there’s a lot to look forward to from now on.
February is one of my favorite months for several reasons. For one thing, February is for Friendship! February 11th is National Make a Friend Day, February 14th is Valentine’s Day, and February 17th is Random Acts of Kindness Day! This month, be sure to let your friends know you care, and show them how much they mean to you. See if you can make a new friend too!
Guess what! February is also a popular month for homeschool birthdays! According to FamousHomeschoolers.net, the following famous homeschoolers were born in February: George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Ansel Adams, Thomas Edison, Wilson “Snowflake” Bentley, Charles Dickens, and Laura Ingalls Wilder. (Laura was taught at home when she was unable to attend school due to distance or weather, and she homeschooled her daughter Rose!)
Of course, we can’t forget Presidents Day! Mount Rushmore, the world’s largest stone monument, is a tribute to four Presidents – George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt. Do you know what else each of these men have in common? As children, none of them had any regular, formal schooling. They were all self-educated or taught at home!
February is also Black History Month. Famous black homeschoolers include: Benjamin Banneker (first African-American scientist), George Washington Carver (agricultural researcher), Booker T. Washington (Tuskegee Institute founder), Louis Armstrong (King of Jazz), Jordin Sparks (singer/actress), Venus and Serena Williams (tennis sisters).
