Letter from the Editor: August 2024

Dear Readers,

Welcome to the August 2024 Back-to-School issue of Homeschooling Teen! Can you believe the end of summer is fast approaching???

What have you been doing over the summer? Did you take a class in summer school? Get a part-time job? Volunteer? Go on a trip? Fun with the family? Hiking? Relaxing by the pool? An amazing adventure across the globe? We’d love to hear from you! Send your stories about what you did this summer to mail@homeschoolingteen.com for possible publication!

The late part of summer is a unique transitional time of year. I know some of you have already cracked open your new books and started the school year in August! Others, like me, are savoring the last days of the season. The 100-degree temperatures are continuing and I still need a vacation. After all, the first day of Autumn isn’t until Sunday, September 22, so officially there’s another month of summer left!

In astronomical terms, the start of summer can be defined very precisely: it begins on the Summer Solstice, which occurs on June 20 or 21, and lasts until the Autumnal Equinox, which falls about September 22 or 23 in the Northern Hemisphere.

However, Labor Day, the first Monday of September every year, has become a symbol of the end of summer and the beginning of a new school year for many. In fact, many climatologists define the start of summer in terms of meteorological phenomena and the calendar year. They claim that the meteorological summer season starts on June 1 and lasts three months, until September 1. That date is quickly approaching!

Whenever it comes time for you to start the fall semester, whether it’s in August or September, remember that you can decide to do things differently this time around, or fall into old patterns. There are numerous ways in which you can switch from vacation to school mode. This can be done even if you’ve already begun the school year. Check out the infographic in this issue for tips to help make the transition go more smoothly and be more organized. Also check out the end-of-summer STEM activities and back-to-school health tips.

Happy Homeschooling!
