Letter From the Editor: August 2021

Happy August!

Summer is now in its home stretch, and a new school year is right around the corner. I always find this time of year a little contradictory. For example, August is known both as “Family Fun Month” and “National Back-to-School Month.” It’s like half the country is still at the beach, and the other half is scrambling to get ready for school. Our local public school already started on August 2nd! That would be way too early for us. As for me and my family, we never officially start until after Labor Day.

At any rate, what better way to finish up the summer than by spending some quality time together! Now’s your chance to enjoy some good old-fashioned family fun before everyone becomes preoccupied with school activities and projects. So watch movies, play games, go hiking and biking, have a picnic or campout, and keep your eyes to the sky. The Perseid meteor shower peaks this month in the pre-dawn hours of Thursday, August 12, but look up whenever you’re outside at night and you may be lucky enough to see a shooting star.

While you’re busy having fun, don’t forget to stock up on school supplies when they’re on sale! Even year-round homeschoolers will appreciate having a brand new set of supplies when moving up to the next grade. Is this the first year your family decided to start homeschooling for real? Not to worry, homeschooling does not have to be difficult, complicated, or expensive. The Easy Homeschooling Library by Lorraine Curry is a source of refreshing encouragement, practical motivation, and timeless advice no matter where you are in your homeschool journey.
