Homeschooling Teen Profile: Austin Pruitt

austin-pruitt2Austin Pruitt was homeschooled for eleven years, from 2nd grade through 12th grade. He is now completing his undergraduate degree at Harding University with a full academic scholarship. As the oldest of five homeschooled children, Austin enjoys motivating and inspiring his younger siblings to excel in their academic studies.

Austin brings this same love of teaching to the classroom at The Home Educator’s Outsourcing Solution (THEO) in Plano, Texas. He finds that true success in helping students excel comes from educating them with a new perspective on learning. Austin encourages students to see school as an exciting challenge and an opportunity for limitless personal growth.

The guiding force in Austin’s life is Christ, and his teaching philosophy stems from his deep Christian roots. Austin’s grandfather, Harvie Pruitt, was president of Lubbock Christian University from 1976-1982. His father, Bryan, serves as an Elder at Prestoncrest Church of Christ in Dallas, Texas.

Austin has a natural affinity for mathematics. He scored a perfect 800 on the math section of the SAT and a perfect 5 on the Calculus AP exam. In early 2013 he founded “Perfect Score Academy” where he teaches students how to ace the math section of the SAT. Austin offers private tutoring for math students at THEO and is also currently coaching the MathCounts team for 6th, 7th, and 8th graders at THEO.

Austin’s academic achievements include: 4.0 GPA, Eta Sigma Alpha Honor Society, Presidential Scholarship at Harding University, Honors Scholar, National Merit Commended Scholar, elected Youth Lt. Governor in Youth and Government program, elected president of the Youth and Government club in Richardson, National Recognition by Duke Talent Identification Program (TIP), and Eagle Scout.

Austin is perhaps most well known as a professional pianist, composer, and recording artist who has sold his musical compositions through iTunes in over 60 countries worldwide. Austin plays all types of piano music: classical, jazz, pop, Christmas, and wedding music. He now teaches piano lessons at his private piano studio. Austin is also an avid independent filmmaker, motivational speaker, part-time preacher, and writer.

Austin is presently writing a book about the power of homeschooling called The Homeschool Revolution. The book will feature interviews with some of the most highly respected and revered leaders and voices in the homeschool community. It will also feature homeschooling stories from the most courageous and outrageous homeschooling parents and students across the country.

Austin says, “I was bullied when I was younger. When I started homeschooling I was able to CHOOSE my peer groups – what a blessing! Over time my social and academic life flourished.” He adds, “In the book I’ll be sharing my personal homeschooling story but what we really need are YOUR thoughts, YOUR convictions, and YOUR personal homeschooling stories.”
