STEM is an acronym referring to the academic disciplines of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics as defined by the National Research Council.
According to the Department of Education, STEM fields of study include computer sciences, engineering, mathematics, natural sciences (including physical, biological, and agricultural sciences), and related programs of study. These fields involve research, innovation, problem solving, and/or the development of new technologies.
Based on statistics published by the Brookings Institution, there are 26 million STEM jobs in the U.S., comprising 20% of all U.S. jobs. These jobs are in computer science, health professions, engineering, architecture, and manufacturing.
