11 Famous Books Inspired by Dreams

We’ve all been stumped while writing before, whether there’s a word just out of reach, or an entire page we’re not sure how to tackle. Writer’s block can happen to anyone, regardless of their skill. Authors and writers who make a living from their words also struggle to come up with ideas from time to time. To combat this, techniques exist to help writers get over their slump. For some it’s simply stepping back, taking a break, and reading a book. For others, it’s relying on meticulous research or a thorough outline. For still others, they simply dream it up.

Dreams connect information, emotions, and memories, often synthesizing them into interesting new insights and experiences. For those who easily remember their dreams, they can become a creative source of story ideas. This isn’t unusual considering the strange habits of famous writers. You may be surprised to learn that throughout history, several of the world’s most popular books began as dreams. Since many of the most easily remembered dreams are bizarre, fantastical, or nightmarish, it makes sense that they often result in horror novels. For example, did you know that Stephen King dreamed the entire plot of Misery on a plane? Or that Robert Louis Stevenson dreamed up The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde?

From Mary Shelley to Stephanie Meyer, famous authors have been known to dream of anything from particular characters, to the entire plots of their books. The next time you can’t think of something to write about, mull it over at night as you fall asleep, and your mind may conjure up an unexpected solution. Keep a notepad next to your bed so that when you wake up, you’re all ready to jot down your thoughts before you forget.
