Synopsis
From Kingdom Story Company, the team behind JESUS REVOLUTION and THE BEST CHRISTMAS PAGEANT EVER, and Lionsgate, the studio behind WONDER, comes THE UNBREAKABLE BOY.
You’ve never met a kid like Austin LeRette. He’s not just one in a million… he’s one in four billion – the odds of being born with both a rare brittle-bone disease and autism.
When his parents, Scott (Zachary Levi) and Teresa (Meghann Fahy), learn that Austin (Jacob Laval) is both autistic and has brittle bone disease, they initially worry for their son’s future. But with Scott’s growing faith and Austin’s incredible spirit, they become “unbreakable,” finding joy, gratitude, and courage even in the most trying times.
Review
“This story is based on true facts. Lots of true facts. As told by AuzMan. That’s me!”
I enjoy movies based on inspiring true stories, and I love how this one promotes autism awareness. Filmed in Oklahoma, it tells the story of Austin LeRette (AKA AuzMan), a boy whose joyful spirit transforms those around him.
Just so you know, the parents don’t start out as the best role models. There’s a lot of drinking at a New Year’s Eve party in the first scene and the guy drives drunk. He and his girlfriend have only been on three dates and she calls him to say she’s pregnant. Scott and Teresa move in together and I’m happy to say they eventually do get married, fall in love, and stay faithful to each other, except they did it backwards!
Their son Austin is born with osteogenesis imperfecta, a genetic condition that causes frequent fractures. The birthing scene may make some viewers uncomfortable. Austin’s bones were so brittle that two of his ribs were already broken when he was born. The poor baby was in pain and crying all the time and no one knew, but I think God formed his personality in a special way to help him get through.
Imagine the difficulty of trying to take care of a rambunctious toddler who runs around and climbs up on things and falls down and his bones break! On top of that, Austin’s autistic and OCD qualities soon become obvious. He doesn’t see things the way other people do. He has a vivid imagination and gets lost in his own world. Austin loves Star Wars, SpongeBob, and superheroes. He has a huge DVD collection.
Austin is a remarkable kid, and the actor who plays him is adorable. Austin talks continuously which can be annoying. But he joyfully lives in harmony with his true self; he isn’t self-conscious in the least. He loves to wear funny hats. I wish I had that much confidence to not care what other people think about me! His spirit is strong, and yet his body is like a fragile piece of china, it’s sad how he can get badly injured so easily.
It’s amazing to watch how Austin always remains upbeat in spite of all his troubles! He cheers up the nurses when he’s in the hospital, and even turns a school bully into a friend. Austin sees the good in everybody and everything – including when the family is facing financial hardship after his dad loses his job. “You’re lucky when you have a dad without a job,” Austin says. “You know why? He gets to be home all the time.”
Indeed, what makes Austin truly unique is his joyous, funny, life-affirming worldview that transforms and unites everyone around him – especially his dad, who changes his own life as he comes to see Austin not as the symbol of something broke, but the triumph of an indestructible spirit.
To meet Austin is to know that being “unbreakable” is not about physical strength, but inner strength. It’s about embracing love and grace, even in the most trying times. We could all learn a thing or two from him!
Like when the bills start piling up, relationships are stressed, and dad starts drinking too much. Oh no, anything else???
Yeah, this movie is not only about a boy’s broken bones, it’s about a broken man. But it shows that your mistakes don’t define you. How you heal does. Sometimes it takes getting broken to get better. Austin’s dad used to think being not content with his life made him ambitious, but he realized it just made him ungrateful.
This is a very poignant movie that brought tears to my eyes. (I’m crying even as I write this review!) It shows that if you have faith and humor, you can find joy even in the hardest times. The unbreakable bond between father and son is a key plot line along with themes of resilience, redemption, and overcoming alcoholism.
CAUTIONS: This film contains mild language, brief violence, and alcohol abuse. It’s best for older children, teens and adults. Rated PG.
