Cast

THE SHIFT stars Kristoffer Polaha as Kevin Garner and also features Sean Astin (The Goonies, Rudy, The Lord of the Rings), Neal McDonough (Band of Brothers), Elizabeth Tabish (The Chosen), and Paras Patel (The Chosen). Directed by Brock Heasley, this movie is a remake of his short film “The Shift” (2017).

It’s always nice to see Sean Astin, and it was fun to see a couple of actors I recognized from The Chosen. Kristoffer Polaha did a great job as the main protagonist, and Neal McDonough was awesome as the evil villain!

McDonough explained in a promotional video that his goal in playing the Benefactor was, “I want to make sure that by the end of this piece… that you really despise me. I want the audience to really understand and hate the devil.”

Review

THE SHIFT is a science fiction film with multiple parallel universes. The concept of alternate realities is a natural fit for sci-fi movies, and in the last few years we’ve seen the multiverse plot device become more mainstream than ever before.

I’m a longtime sci-fi fan, but since there have been so many multiverse films produced lately, they were actually starting to bore me. Never did I expect to see such a unique and thrilling Christian take on the concept!

Much of science fiction is anti-Christian, but like C.S. Lewis did with The Space Trilogy, this movie proves that sci-fi can have Christian themes. THE SHIFT shows how sin ruins our lives. It portrays a man who is in a long grueling arduous life fighting sin.

When Kevin gets dumped into the alternate universe (just when he thinks his day can’t get any worse!), it reminded me of Half-Life 2 when Gordon Freeman finds himself in City 17, surrounded by Civil Protection units and oppressed citizens in a dreary dystopian setting. (THE SHIFT was filmed in downtown Birmingham, Alabama!)

Kevin’s new daily life reveals the level of fear and dread among citizens ruled by a totalitarian government. There’s always hope, though, as evidenced by a few undercover resistance fighters and an underground church.

In THE SHIFT, the director successfully weaves together a thought-provoking morality tale where Christianity meets science fiction. One particularly revealing moment is when the Satan character (the Benefactor) is confronted by someone resisting him by praying to God. This movie also has many references to the book of Job.

A lot of Christian films look like made-for-TV movies. THE SHIFT, on the other hand, lends itself well to the big screen with its engaging storyline, brilliant performances, intense action, and compelling cinematography.

Conclusion

We need to be patrons to Christian movie artists. They tell us stories from a different perspective. Go see their movies with family and friends. Too often we are funding a different storyline, one that Jesus does not like; one that the world likes. He came to tell us the truth. Let’s see movies full of truth.

So… what exactly do a mysterious stranger, the multiverse, and a dystopian world have to do with Christianity? And will Kevin ever be able to return to the love of his life?
