About Andrea

If you don’t know who Andrea Bocelli is, his own life in an amazing story. He’s a famous singer from Lajatico, Tuscany, Italy. He was born visually impaired, with congenital glaucoma. He has said that his mother’s decision to give birth to him and overrule the doctor’s advice to “abort the child” because he would be born with a disability was the inspiration for him to oppose abortion. Imagine if the world would have never known the blind tenor with the golden voice!

Bocelli showed a great passion for music as a young boy. He started piano lessons at age 6 and later learned to play the flute, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, guitar, and drums. By age 7, he was listening to records and trying to emulate the great singers of the time. At the age of 12, he became completely blind following a brain hemorrhage resulting from a football (soccer) accident in which he was hit in the head by the ball while playing goalkeeper. Andrea’s singing career got started in the late 1980s, when he began performing in piano bars throughout Italy.

Bocelli rose to fame in 1994, winning the newcomer’s section of the 44th Sanremo Music Festival performing “Il mare calmo della sera” and catching the attention of another famous opera tenor, Luciano Pavarotti. Since then, Bocelli has recorded 15 solo studio albums of both pop and classical music, three greatest hits albums, and nine operas, selling over 75 million records worldwide. As a crossover performer noted for his unique blend of opera and pop music, he often brought classical music to the top of international pop charts. He has been nominated for five Grammy awards in his career.

Describing his movie, Bocelli said: “We journeyed by horse for over 300 kilometers along a path that was not always easy to travel, but absolutely beautiful, made of meadows and forests; sacred places filled with lasting testimonies of faith, full of art of incredible beauty, and views in front of which one can’t but ponder about creation and the miraculous work of our Heavenly Father.”

What is Andrea Bocelli’s hope for you when you see THE JOURNEY in theaters beginning April 2? He said, “My wish is that the movie can offer an invitation to fully live and recognize our daily miracles.”

Movie Review

The first time I heard of this Andrea Bocelli musical special, I instantly thought of Grandpa. I have fond memories of going to Grandpa’s house on Saturday evenings, watching his TBN shows with him, and sitting beside him while he showed me YouTube videos of his favorite singers. I know he would have loved THE JOURNEY! The main reason why I wanted to watch it was in memory of him.

THE JOURNEY offers a variety of music by diverse artists so there’s something for everyone including contemporary Christian, gospel, traditional hymns, and classical music. There was even Simon and Garfunkel’s “Sounds of Silence” played on two cellos! That was one of my favorites, as was TAYA’s “Oceans” (Where Feet May Fail), Franz Schubert’s “Ave Maria” performed by Andrea Bocelli himself, as well as Bocelli singing “Hallelujah” with Tori Kelly, and “Amazing Grace” sung by all of the artists.

Andrea Bocelli’s THE JOURNEY begins at the Vatican with a blessing and prayer from the Pope, making it clear that Andrea Bocelli is a devout Roman Catholic and very well respected. If you’re not Catholic or don’t like the Pope, you’ll just have to overlook that part which lasts less than a minute. The rest of THE JOURNEY is suitable for Christians of all denominations.

The film features footage of Andrea Bocelli and his wife traveling together on horseback along the ancient pilgrimage road Via Francigena. They meet up with some of the other artists and have meaningful conversations about their backgrounds, music, and spiritual things. Then there is a musical performance in a grand location such as an ancient cathedral or with the scenic Italian landscape as a backdrop. After that, the Bocellis ride on to the next location, and so on. The total run time is 1 hour and 30 minutes. The film also includes cameos with Bocelli’s son Matteo, 25, and daughter Virginia, 11.

Most teens and kids won’t find THE JOURNEY particularly appealing unless they are interested in Italy’s famed pilgrimage route, wish to virtually tour the Italian countryside, admire ancient architecture, are fans of one or more featured performers, or are musicians themselves and would appreciate hearing these artists wax poetically about what music means to them. But your grandparents will certainly enjoy it, so treat them this Easter season and take them to see it!

Buy tickets today to see THE JOURNEY, in theaters beginning Palm Sunday and continuing through Holy Week and Easter Sunday: April 2, 3, 4 & 6, 7, 8, 9.
