Southwestern Assemblies of God University

SAGU

Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) is a Bible-based institution of higher learning located in Waxahachie, Texas. It exists primarily to educate and prepare students for vocational ministry, but the university also has programs in a number of other fields. SAGU has two colleges: the College of Arts and Professions, and the College of Bible and Church Ministries. Between the two, SAGU offers over 60 academic programs on campus and through distance education.

SAGU seeks ambitious homeschool students who want to be an uncommon influence. The purpose of SAGU is to prepare undergraduate and graduate students spiritually, academically, professionally, and cross culturally so as to successfully fill evangelistic, missionary, and church ministry roles and to provide quality educational and professional Christian service wherever needed throughout the world.

SAGU’s mission is rooted in the great commission of Jesus Christ to “Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation…” and to “make disciples of all nations… teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you,” which is the primary emphasis of SAGU’s parent body, the General Council of the Assemblies of God.

The university has seven core values that guide its mission. These core values are the following: Bible-based Education, Pentecostal Distinction, Spiritual Formation, Academic Excellence, Missions-mindedness, Servant Leadership, and Community and Personal Wellness. The university encourages individuality but also nurtures students in a supportive environment that helps them to find the right path for their career and calling.

SAGU is accredited to award masters, bachelors, and associates degrees. The following are some types of degrees and majors offered at SAGU: Bible and Theology, Business and Management, Church Ministries, Communications and Journalism, Counseling Psychology, Criminal Justice, Education, English, Foreign Language and Literature, Health Sciences, History, Music, Nursing, Social Studies, Visual and Performing Arts, and World Ministries (Missions).

The Harrison School of Graduate Studies is one of the fastest-growing programs at SAGU. Graduate courses are offered on campus or through distance education. SAGU’s distance education program was created in 1984 to provide a flexible format for adult students (22 years and older) using a combination of audio/video, online multimedia, and personal instruction. The university also offers Double Majors, Dual Enrollment of High School Students, External Degree Program, Independent Study, Internships, ROTC, Army, and Teacher Certification.

SAGU’s annual enrollment is 2,000+ with a faculty to student ratio of 1:14. Students typically find that the small college environment allows for small class sizes and personal interaction with professors. The university has disability services as well, so be sure to inquire about them if needed.

All applicants admitted for studies at Southwestern must evidence a born again spiritual experience as defined by the following passages of scripture: John 3:3; Ephesians 2:8-9; Titus 2:11; 3:5-7; and I John 1:7-10. A minister’s recommendation is required. Applicants must also answer four short essay questions describing their personal background, salvation experience, ministry involvement, and future plans.

SAGU is a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics and the National Christian College Athletic Association. It currently fields teams in Baseball, Basketball (men and women’s), Football, Soccer (men and women’s), and Volleyball (women’s).

SAGU has many other organizations and clubs for students to choose from whether they have a passion for drama, history, music, missions, prayer, school spirit, cheerleading, student congress, free enterprise, marketing and media, street witnessing, as well as community outreaches to children, the elderly, and those in prison.
