There Are More Data Center Jobs Than You May Think

Modern data centers are rapidly expanding to support AI. These data centers are going in everywhere! Massive buildings, usually white with narrow slits for windows. They all look exactly the same. Each data center is filled with computers from floor to ceiling inside the building.

Tech giants have been outbidding home developers for land to build their data centers, contributing to local housing shortages. Data centers generate far more heat than standard commercial buildings. In order to keep the computers cool, they consume enormous amounts of electricity and water, which is a drain on natural resources.

Communities near proposed facilities face noise, strained infrastructure, and the loss of farmland, costs that are immediate and visible, as reported by The Brookings Institute.

According to a recent poll, 52 percent of Americans oppose the construction of data centers near their communities, and just 16 percent approve.

But where there are losers there are also winners, says Dirty Jobs host Mike Rowe.

Data Center Electricians

Commercial electricians are currently in high demand because they are needed for installing electricity to data centers.

“The electricians that I met most recently at a data center in Plano [Texas] were making $260,000 a year,” Rowe said. “All three of them had been poached three times in the prior 18 months. That’s what’s going on in certain parts of the country, in the electric game right now,” he continued.

Rowe compared the highly competitive nature of the data center electrician job market to “the draft in the Major Leagues.”

How to become a data center electrician:

  1. Complete high school with a focus on math and science, which provide a strong foundation for understanding basic principles of electricity and circuitry.
  2. Enroll in vocational or community college programs that provide practical knowledge in electrical theory, electrical codes, and safety practices.
  3. Obtain certifications such as OSHA 30 to demonstrate safety awareness.
  4. Enter a 4-5 year apprenticeship program to gain more technical training while practicing basic hands-on skills and safety procedures. Some programs offer specialized training in data center electrical systems, which can give you a competitive edge.
  5. Obtain a journeyman electrician license, which allows you to work independently. Develop specialized skills for data center systems.
  6. Gain experience and advance to senior roles. For senior roles, a master electrician license may be required.

Data Center Jobs

On the outside, these data centers may appear to basically run themselves. However, “one of the great misapprehensions around data centers is that they don’t generate jobs” says Daniel Golding, an expert at building hyperscale AI and Cloud infrastructure.

While any one data center may hire only a few dozen full-time workers, there is actually a greater variety of data center jobs than you may think. Data centers employ a wide range of roles, from hands‑on electricians and hardware technicians to analytics, facilities, and management positions.

This career path offers high earning potential and the opportunity to work in state-of-the-art, climate-controlled facilities with critical digital infrastructure. Here are some examples:

  • Data Center Technician — Installs, troubleshoots, and decommissions servers, networking gear, and cabling. Tasks include rack‑and‑stack, fiber/copper installation, diagnostics, and following standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Data Center Technician 2 — Mid‑level hardware role handling enterprise server installation, repairs, cabling, inventory, and on‑call support. Requires strong hardware knowledge and ability to work long shifts.
  • Critical Environment Technician — Responds to abnormal facility conditions, stabilizes power/cooling issues, and ensures uptime. Common in hyperscale environments.
  • Network Install Technician — Installs network infrastructure, fiber, structured cabling, and supports multi‑site data center operations.
  • GPU Infrastructure Technician — Specialized role deploying and maintaining large‑scale GPU clusters for AI workloads. Includes fiber coordination, hardware migrations, and HPC troubleshooting.
  • Data Center Site Manager — Acts as the focal point for facility operations, overseeing technicians and ensuring uptime.
  • Data Center Manager (Night Shift) — Manages workflows, assigns tickets, and leads operations across multiple data center stages.

Entry Level Jobs

Entry level data center jobs generally fall into a few clear categories: hands on technician roles, cabling/installation, logistics, facilities, and trainee/apprentice positions. Here are some examples:

Hands‑On Technician Roles (True Entry Level)

  • Data Center Technician Apprentice — Duties include data trending, tracking, and learning to analyze systems to prevent outages.
  • Data Center Technician — Prepares, stages, sets up, and performs server startups. Entry‑level IT technicians preferred.
  • Data Center Operations Technician — Supports hardware/software installation, configuration, and maintenance.
  • Data Center Technician (Microsoft) — Completes security/data‑management training and supports hardware operations.

Cabling, Installation & Infrastructure Roles

  • Infra Delivery Install Technician — Supports datacenters in various operational stages; structured cabling and hardware installs.
  • Network Install Technician — Travel/commute between datacenter locations; fiber/copper installation.
  • Entry‑Level Fiber Optic Technician — Installs, maintains, and repairs fiber networks.
  • Technician I – Data Center Services — Entry‑level communications technician interpreting blueprints and project documents.

Logistics, Warehouse & Support Roles

  • Data Center Logistics Specialist — Works in warehouse/datacenter environments; handles inventory, data entry, and equipment flow.
  • Entry‑Level IT Support Associate — Follows strict datacenter security protocols and supports client access.
  • Computer Testing Technician — Handles data erasure, inventory recording, and hardware testing.

Facilities & Environmental Support

  • Facility Technician — Supports cooling infrastructure and reliability of critical systems.
  • HVAC Controls Technician — A specialized HVAC professional who maintains, troubleshoots, and optimizes the cooling and airflow systems in mission‑critical data centers, often earning $60K–$95K+ with strong demand due to AI and cloud computing growth.

Broader Technical Trainee Roles (Often Lead to Data Center Work)

  • Network Engineer (Entry Level) — Starts with on‑site training to build technical abilities; common feeder role into NOC/datacenter work.
  • Apprentice Security Technician — Low‑voltage wiring, network devices, surveillance systems—skills directly transferable to datacenter cabling roles.

Specialized Skills for Data Centers

Data center electricians work with high-voltage systems, UPS units, emergency generators, busway systems, and electrical monitoring systems. Unlike general construction electricians, the focus is on maintaining uptime and reliability, as even brief power disruptions can be costly. Strong industrial electrical experience and familiarity with three-phase systems are highly valued.

The highest‑impact entry‑level certifications for data center jobs are CompTIA Server+, Cisco CCNA, AWS Cloud Practitioner, and Schneider DCCA. These appear most often in real job postings and deliver the strongest salary lift. When it comes to data centers, “If you can’t beat them, join them.”
