Dear Readers,
Happy February! It’s one of my favorite months. For one thing, February is for Friendship! February 11th is National Make a Friend Day, February 14th is Valentine’s Day, and February 17th is Random Acts of Kindness Day!
This month, be sure to let your friends know you care, and show them how much they mean to you. See if you can make a new friend too! You’ll find lots of articles about friendship and helping others in this month’s issue.
I must admit that I love chocolates, candy hearts, and valentines. I also love the emphasis on kindness that we share with family, friends, and community this month.
There’s often one thing missing, though: love for ourselves. Whether it’s pressures we put on ourselves or outside forces pushing against us, everyone seems to be fighting a battle with themselves. Paradoxically, when you’re fighting yourself, you can never win.
Maybe you’ve given up on your New Years’ Resolutions; maybe homework is filling your head with books and late hours in the library. Believe me, I’m right there with you. Life never seems to slow down and everything else seems to stack up.
Burnout extends beyond physical fatigue — it can also reflect mental and emotional exhaustion, a lack of energy to do even those things you typically enjoy. It’s often in a success driven mindset when we forget that taking time for ourselves is just as important as taking time for work and school.
Taking care of yourself is an expression of self-love, which isn’t a bad thing like selfishness; it’s just a state of appreciation for oneself that supports our physical, mental, and spiritual growth. While you’re busy helping everyone else, don’t forget about your own needs and personal well-being.
February is a short month, so let’s make the most of it! My hope for you all this month is that you also take some time to be your own valentine. Happy Valentine’s Day!
