A nation’s armed forces constitute its combined military services. Armed Forces Day is a holiday dedicated to honoring the men and women currently serving in the U.S. military by recognizing their service, commitment, and role in national defense.

Modern armed forces are commonly divided into specialized branches dealing with land, naval, and air warfare, and, by definition in U.S. law, space as well. These branches consist of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Space Force.

Armed Forces Day honors all active-duty service members across all military branches, including Reserve and National Guard members. It is distinct from:

Veterans Day, which honors all who previously served.
Memorial Day, which honors those who died in service.

Armed Forces Day is held annually on the third Saturday in May. It will be observed on Saturday, May 17, 2026.

History and Purpose:

Armed Forces Day was created in 1949 after the National Security Act of 1947 unified the military under the Department of Defense. The first nationwide observance took place on May 20, 1950.

The purpose of Armed Forces Day is to increase public understanding of the military’s role, showcase equipment and capabilities, and strengthen civilian-military connections.
