Doge started out as an internet meme featuring a Shiba Inu dog. The Doge meme inspired the creation of Dogecoin, a cryptocurrency launched in December 2013 as a joke, but which later gained real-world traction. Elon Musk has been a longtime supporter of Dogecoin, often influencing its price through his comments and actions. Since President Trump was re-elected, Musk’s involvement with Doge has shifted in a major way.
Now, DOGE stands for a U.S. government initiative led by Elon Musk aimed at improving efficiency and saving money within federal agencies. This initiative focuses on streamlining operations, eliminating bureaucracy, and reducing wasteful spending.
The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) was established by executive order on January 20, 2025, replacing the United States Digital Service (USDS) and forming the U.S. DOGE Service Temporary Organization (USDSTO), which is set to end on July 4, 2026.
Elon Musk has played a significant role in DOGE, serving as a Senior Advisor to the President. As a “special government employee,” Musk is permitted to work in the federal government for no more than 130 days a year, which in Musk’s case will fall on May 30. Musk recently announced that he would soon be shifting his focus back to Tesla.
Meanwhile, as President Donald Trump celebrated his 100th day in office last week, DOGE announced it had cut $160 billion in waste. DOGE has canceled government contracts and grants, ended leases, eliminated thousands of positions, and made changes to government programs.
For example, previous payments were often made without descriptions, receipts, or invoices. That’s pretty sloppy accounting for a government agency! From now on, a mandatory “brief, written justification … submitted by the agency employee who approved the payment” must be posted.
DOGE’s approach has been unprecedented in its speed and scale, making it far more disruptive than past government efficiency efforts. But that’s what Musk does best! He embodies the Silicon Valley entrepreneurial ethos of “move fast and break things” — as he has done at his own companies SpaceX, Tesla and Twitter. This mindset clashes with the traditional government bureaucratic culture that moves very slowly, if it ever does anything at all.
DOGE has exposed an alarming lack of government oversight while uncovering many examples of waste and fraud. These examples include improper payments such as social security checks that went to dead people, and millions in taxpayer funds wastefully spent on an array of questionable projects like LGBT activism, a DEI musical, a transgender opera, and birth control around the globe.
The government has used U.S. taxpayer money for some of the craziest things!
- $20 million to create a Sesame Street in Iraq
- $2 million for Moroccan pottery classes
- $2 million promoting tourism to Lebanon
- $6 million to fund tourism in Egypt
- $2.5 million for electric vehicles in Vietnam
- $1.5 million to advance diversity equity and inclusion in Serbia
Shouldn’t taxpayer funds be used to benefit U.S. citizens, like for improved highways and infrastructure??? I understand there may be a need for humanitarian relief and disaster recovery, but not silly things like these!
Of the amounts accounted for from DOGE’s work, the departments with the most cuts from their budgets are:
- USAID: $24 billion reduced between grants, contracts and leases.
- The Department of Health and Human Services: $15 billion reduced between grants, contracts and leases.
- The Department of Defense: $2.75 billion reduced between grants, contracts and leases.
- The Department of Education: $2.75billion reduced between grants, contracts and leases.
- The Department of Agriculture: $1.26 billion reduced between grants, contracts and leases.
- The Department of Safety: $973 million reduced between grants, contracts and leases.
- The Department of Homeland Security: $961 million reduced between grants, contracts and leases.
- The Department of Housing and Urban Development: $747 million reduced between grants, contracts and leases.
- The Department of Labor: $452 million reduced between grants, contracts and leases.
- The Environmental Protection Agency: $351 million reduced between grants, contracts and leases.
For decades, the government has been racking up the National Debt and doing nothing to curtail it. Elon Musk and his team have only taken a few months to cut back on billions of government waste, and they’ve probably only scratched the surface. Enough of this runaway spending while expecting the people to pay more in taxes to cover it!
Musk’s team of smart young computer experts has done an amazing job in a short amount of time. The DOGE Team is still looking for world-class talent to work long hours identifying/eliminating waste, fraud, and abuse. These are full-time, salaried positions for software engineers, product managers, designers, lawyers, data scientists, business analysts, cybersecurity professionals, and other fields. Visit DOGE.gov for more details.
It amazes me how many people are up in arms about the idea of DOGE and Elon Musk’s involvement. Since when is saving money controversial??? I mean, if you’re a taxpayer, wouldn’t you want to know that your hard-earned money is being used wisely and not being funneled into pet projects and bureaucrat’s pockets? They even discovered that USAID was funding terrorists!
“We would have gotten away with it, too, if it weren’t for you meddling kids and your stupid DOGE!”
