The Dead Sea Squirrels: Season 1 (Original Soundtrack + Book Giveaway!)

Have you heard of The Dead Sea Squirrels? The Dead Sea Squirrels is a best-selling children’s book series, animated adventure show, and music soundtrack featuring talking squirrels that teach moral lessons based on Biblical truths.

Season 1 premiered exclusively on Minno beginning February 14, 2025. Season 2 of The Dead Sea Squirrels is currently in production. Cybersquirrels, Book 13, was released on April 7, 2026. Book 14, Field Day Frenzy (preorder now!), is scheduled to release on October 6, 2026.

I’m a fan of VeggieTales from way back, and I recognized the name of Mike Nawrocki (VeggieTales co‑creator) in The Dead Sea Squirrels, which got my interest. He created The Dead Sea Squirrels as a new way to help children connect with the life and teachings of Jesus through lighthearted humor, memorable characters, and imaginative storytelling.

As the story goes, a 10-year-old boy named Michael and his best buddy Justin are spending the summer in Israel along the banks of the Dead Sea. Deep inside a cave, the boys discover a couple of dehydrated squirrels that were preserved in Dead Sea salt for 2,000 years. Michael brings the crusty critters back home with him to Tennessee where, after leaving them out near his bedroom window, they rehydrate and spring to life!

A crazy concept, I know, but that’s to be expected from the guy who created VeggieTales and voiced Larry the Cucumber.

Merle and Pearl, the ancient squirrels, use their firsthand knowledge of Jesus’ teachings to help Michael and his friends tackle modern-day challenges. The squirrels mentor the kids to navigate faith and friendship through character growth and real-world situations. The show’s humor comes from fish‑out‑of‑water situations, misunderstandings, and the squirrels’ old-world perspective clashing with modern life.

After spending decades writing VeggieTales for young children ages 2-8, Mike Nawrocki created The Dead Sea Squirrels for slightly older kids ages 6-12. Even though it’s meant for older kids, we have a 1-, 2- and 3-year old who will excitedly watch The Dead Sea Squirrels and dance to the music!

The Dead Sea Squirrels: Season 1 Original Soundtrack gives families a new way to carry the faith-filled fun and biblical lessons of The Dead Sea Squirrels into everyday life, from car rides and playtime, to family time and church settings. Across 22 catchy sing-along songs, the album reinforces the themes encountered throughout Season 1 of the animated series including kindness, honesty and self-control, while also exploring the Nativity, Jesus’ ministry, the Crucifixion, and the Resurrection.

The result is fun, memorable music that children will want to hear over and over again, with messages parents can feel good about reinforcing. Even teens and adults won’t mind listening to these songs as they’re not annoying like some other kids music.

The Dead Sea Squirrels soundtrack brings together an impressive lineup of Christian music artists and performers, including Matthew West, MercyMe’s Bart Millard, Katy Nichole, Ellie Holcomb, Mac Powell of Third Day, Steve Taylor, and three-time GRAMMY Award winner Ashley Cleveland. The album also features Matthew Ward, Durell Comedy, Mike Nawrocki, Jenny Littleton, Mazzy Mason, Christopher Bailey, Aaron Armstrong, Rob Howard, Duncan Phillips, Henry O. Arnold, The Golden Hours and James Weir.

The soundtrack includes something for everyone including folk, rock, country, gospel, and alternative. A couple of the tunes like “Rolling Down the River” remind me of old VeggieTales songs, and if you used to watch that show, some of the voices will sound familiar. These songs are fun and upbeat, but not quite as silly, with lyrics that teach valuable lessons. My favorites include “We’re Thessalonians,” “The Prison Song,” “I Roll With Self-Control,” “The Kingdom of God,” and “He’s Alive.” I’m really impressed that Steve Taylor, the innovative Christian rock artist, played such a big part in producing both the series and the soundtrack. His style works well for kids’ music!
