Book Review

Priscilla Shirer’s book, I Surrender All, takes its name from a classic Christian hymn:

All to Jesus I surrender,
All to Him I freely give;
I will ever love and trust Him,
In His presence daily live.

I surrender all, I surrender all;
All to Thee, my blessed Savior,
I surrender all.

Shirer’s I Surrender All book was inspired by themes in the feature film THE FORGE. The movie is about a 19-year-old high school graduate, whose mom (Priscilla Shirer!) challenges him to seek a more disciplined and purposeful life. I enjoyed the movie, so I thought I might like this book. Priscilla Shirer is an awesome actress and an amazing author. She’s actually written a lot of Bible study books, but this is the first one of hers that I’ve ever read.

The book got off to a good start with a story she told in the preface which totally captured my attention, and already gave me a hint at what the book was going to be about. For example, Jesus may be our Savior but is He the LORD of our life? The author asks some hard questions to make you think about that. She also makes a good point about the difference between a pupil and a disciple. A pupil is someone who learns from a teacher, but a disciple is a follower who is completely committed.

Thus, the title: I Surrender All.

Meaning EVERYTHING.

This book has 8 chapters, each of which elaborates on that idea:

Everything You Have.
Everything You Need.
Everything You Are.
Everything You’re Becoming.
Everything You Want.
Everything You Face.
Everywhere You Go.
Everything For Jesus.

In the final chapter of her book, Shirer describes the kind of disciple-making portrayed in THE FORGE movie. She discusses the early church disciples in the Book of Acts. She acknowledges the people who discipled her in her life.

This book would be good to read for personal enlightenment, or to read and discuss as part of a Bible study group. Each chapter quotes from the Bible, and each chapter ends with Bible verses for further reading. Each chapter also has questions to think about and space for journaling.
