Review
WHITE BIRD is a coming-of-age period drama film based on the 2019 graphic novel WHITE BIRD: A Wonder Story by best-selling author R. J. Palacio. WHITE BIRD uniquely serves as both a prequel and a sequel to WONDER (2017).
WHITE BIRD was directed by Marc Forster, a German-Swiss filmmaker best known for his feature films Finding Neverland, World War Z, and Christopher Robin. WHITE BIRD is a very visually rich movie, which makes sense since it’s based on a pictorial book.
If you are a fan of WONDER, WHITE BIRD is a movie you won’t want to miss. It adds much more depth and context to the story. If you’re not familiar with the WONDER book or movie, WHITE BIRD can stand alone as a meaningful film with a timeless message that will change the way you view the world.
In WHITE BIRD, Julian’s grandmother tells him the harrowing and heart-wrenching story of how she, a young Jewish girl, was hidden by a family in a Nazi-occupied French village during World War II, and how the boy she and her classmates once shunned because of his disability became her savior and best friend.
WHITE BIRD is the right story at the right time. Filmed in the Czech Republic in February 2021, the movie was initially set to release in September 2022, but it experienced several delays. Nevertheless, it was well worth the wait and is actually more timely now than ever when you consider what’s happening in the world today.
Like most films related to the Holocaust, WHITE BIRD is deeply moving with some scenes that are challenging and heartbreaking to watch – but its touching theme of kindness and empathy is certainly one that society needs right now.
As Grandmère tells Julian, “It always takes courage to be kind, but in those days, such kindness could cost you everything.” With poignant symbolism and creative cinematography, the artistically appealing WHITE BIRD film brings Grandmère’s story out of the past and sets it firmly at this moment in time.
History buffs may notice that the weapons used by the French Nazi sympathizers in WHITE BIRD are not German weapons. This is because the Germans supplied their collaborators with captured weapons from other countries such as Russia and England. I’m always impressed with movies that are historically accurate even when it comes to obscure facts like that, so I was pleased to see that the makers of this film really did their research.
Despite the gravity of the material, WHITE BIRD at times takes on an almost magical, fantasy feel, demonstrating how people can use their imagination to at least temporarily escape the harsh realities of everyday life. It’s really sad, though, how the Nazis transformed a girl’s idyllic, fairy-tale childhood into a dark Grimm’s fairy tale.
This story does not resemble the usual type of film in the faith-based genre. However, it artfully shows the stark contrast between the good side and the bad side of humanity. WHITE BIRD is a testament to the courage it takes to extend kindness and love during the worst of times. See it this weekend and support a film that will make a difference!
