Book Description
Prayer is a beautiful way to tell God about everything we’re going through. But when emotions run high or life gets overwhelming, it can be tough to find the right words. Teach Me to Pray: Praying God’s Word from A to Z offers readers a rich collection of prayers designed to help them better understand the world, express their feelings to God, and use their Bible in prayer.
Organized alphabetically, this book guides readers through key topics from a biblical perspective― including anger, confession, envy, friendship, gossip, healing, identity, justice, and more. Perfect for individual, family, and church contexts, each engaging reading features a memory verse, a short devotion, relevant follow-up verses, and a heartfelt prayer. With this accessible resource, the next generation is better equipped to build a solid biblical foundation while learning to love God and others more deeply.
- Written for Kids Ages 8-12: Features straightforward language, engaging prayers that rhyme, and simple teachings. I would say it’s great for teens, too, because it has prayers for things like “Vocation” and “Honesty” and “Loneliness,” which are all things that teens can relate to.
- Topical: Addresses a wide variety of topics including anger, confession, envy, friendship, gossip, healing, identity, justice, and more.
- A to Z Framework: Encyclopedic structure makes it easy for children and parents to find a specific emotion or topic for prayer.
- Versatile: Perfect for morning devotionals, family meals, Sunday school, homeschool, bedtime routines, or whenever the Spirit leads.
My Review
Teach Me to Pray by Kristen Wetherell is much better than I even thought it would be! The book is absolutely beautiful, both inside and out! This quality hardcover is 7.25” wide x 9.25” high x ½” thick. It’s comfortable to hold and also looks good on a shelf. The front and back cover design is lovely and colorful with exquisite detail. Even the spine is thoughtfully designed with matching details, so it will be eye-catching when placed vertically alongside other books in a row. Additional special touches include a presentation page, red ribbon bookmark, and textured endpapers that feel like linen. There are 108 pages including an alphabetical table of contents, an introduction from the author, and a note on how to use the book.
The contents of this book are excellent quality, too. They say it’s written for kids ages 8-12, but I’d say it’s great for teens because it includes prayers on things like anger, discouragement, envy, gossip, nervousness, peer pressure, temptation, vanity, vocation, and worry. In addition to the prayers that help you get through difficult times, it includes prayers that remind you to pray about more positive topics such as kindness, joy, missions, scripture, and thankfulness. Anyone who has trouble praying could benefit from this book. Even adults will find the information on these pages useful! I’m impressed that the author was able to consistently write meaningful poems with good rhythms and rhymes on so many topics without any of them sounding corny!
I love the A-Z format. There are 52 prayers, two for each letter of the alphabet. Each prayer has a nicely illustrated two-page spread. The left-hand side features the prayer itself. The right-hand side has related Bible verses to read, things to think about, and actionable items for readers to “Do Something About It.” You could go through this book purposefully, studying one prayer and its devotional prompts per week. Or if you’re struggling with something in particular, you can look up a prayer on the topic. Or simply keep the book on hand for browsing through the prayers and you’re sure to find one that speaks to you at the time. This book is a unique and helpful prayer and devotional resource for Christian families, homeschools, and church libraries.
