Here’s the reasoning behind the preference for 24‑hour time in STEM:
- Eliminates AM/PM confusion. Scientific work often involves precise timing, so removing ambiguity is essential.
- Matches global scientific standards. Research, aviation, medicine, and engineering all coordinate internationally, and the 24‑hour clock is the global norm.
- Used in data logging and instruments. Computers, lab equipment, and time‑stamped data typically default to 24‑hour format.
- Preferred in high‑precision fields. Medicine, military, emergency services, and scientific labs rely on it for accuracy.
Even in STEM, 12‑hour time may appear in:

Converting Times
Converting between 12‑hour time and 24‑hour military time is one of those skills that becomes automatic once you know the shortcuts.
To convert from a 12-hour clock to a 24-clock, you simply add 12 to the hours after noon; e.g. 1:00 pm becomes 13:00 because 1 + 12 = 13.
To convert from a 24-hour clock to a 12-clock, you do the opposite: subtract 12 from the hours after noon; e.g. 13:00 becomes 1:00 pm because 13 – 12 = 1.
Only two weird ones:
- 00:00 = midnight
- 12:00 = noon
No Math Needed
Humans are great at pattern recognition, but terrible at mental arithmetic under pressure. Here’s a trick that people in aviation, medicine, and engineering use. It works because your brain recognizes patterns—no math needed.
Instead of converting numbers, you memorize six anchor times. Everything else becomes automatic.
The 6 anchor points:
- 00:00 = midnight
- 01:00-05:00 = early morning
- 06:00-11:00 = morning
- 12:00 = noon
- 13:00-17:00 = afternoon
- 18:00-23:00 = evening/night
This trick turns conversion into a pattern, not a calculation. Once you know these zones, your brain stops “calculating” and starts filling in the blanks.
