Miami University: Ohio’s Homeschool-Friendly Public Ivy

Miami University is a public research university located in Oxford, Ohio, with regional campus options. The school is recognized for its academic quality, vibrant student life, and historic campus. Founded in 1809, it’s one of the oldest public universities in the U.S.

The Miami University Natural Area is a greenbelt surrounding the campus, featuring over 17 miles of hiking trails. Students and visitors alike can hike through the Silvoor Biology Sanctuary and up to the bluffs, or through the 100 acre Western Woods to enjoy a “magnificent stand of oaks, beech and maples.”

The main Oxford campus is historic and residential, with a strong sense of tradition and an Ivy-League feel. Students enjoy an active extracurricular life with 600+ organizations on campus, as well as opportunities for hands-on research, honors, and study abroad.

Some students prefer the smaller, commuter‑friendly regional campuses located in Hamilton, Middletown, and West Chester. Miami University also has an international campus in Luxembourg (Dolibois European Center).

Homeschool Admissions

The Miami University website explicitly states that it welcomes alternatively educated students, including homeschool students. Applications are reviewed using the same admissions criteria as traditional high school students, and homeschoolers must complete the same core curriculum expected of all applicants.
