National American Teddy Bear Day is celebrated on November 14th. It was on that day in 1902 when President Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt was out hunting and refused to shoot a bear cub. The story drew a lot of attention, and the demand for stuffed toy bears became a craze. Thus, President Roosevelt became the father of the Teddy bear. Fast forward to 123 years later, and teddy bears remain popular among all ages!
Teddy bears aren’t just for kids, and there are people who collect antique or vintage bears. Moreover, psychologists note that emotional attachment to stuffed animals can persist into adulthood and is completely normal. Teddy bears often carry sentimental value and can be linked to positive memories. Hugging a teddy bear can also provide a sense of safety and calm, helping kids and teens cope with stress, anxiety, or trauma.
On platforms like Reddit, teens openly share how stuffed animals help them feel better during panic attacks or emotional lows. One 13-year-old described their plush collection as a source of comfort and joy, despite societal pressure to “grow out of it.” How about you? Do you still have a teddy bear or two?
