Overview

Everyone has questions about religion, but when you’re young, finding the answers can be difficult. Some books are too complex and others don’t dive deeply enough into the faith topics that matter most to kids and younger teens. So where can young readers go to grow in their understanding of God and his word?

The 10 Questions series invites children ages 8-14 to investigate spiritual questions and provides reliable theological and practical answers on their level. In this volume, Beth Broom offers biblical answers about the origin and purpose of suffering, helping young readers navigate their pain, seek comfort in God, and help others in their distress.

Written to be read alone or with family, 10 Questions About Pain & Suffering is the perfect way for middle-grade readers to start or end each day reflecting on the things of God. The 10 Questions book presents 10 vital questions about one important topic, exploring each question in 3 short devotions.

Review

10 Questions About Pain & Suffering: 30 Devotions for Kids, Teens & Families by Beth Bloom is a thoughtfully written book that would be suitable for all ages. Seriously, they say it’s for kids ages 8-14, but I’d say it’s best for older teenagers and it’s even good for adults. I mean, who of any age doesn’t have spiritual and philosophical questions about why God allows pain and suffering?

This quality softcover book is 5.25” wide x 8” high x approximately ½” thick. It’s comfortable to hold, easy to read, and has a colorful cover that catches the eye. Sometimes one’s pain and suffering is of a personal or delicate nature. So this would be a good book to just leave laying out on a table for a hurting person to discreetly pick up and browse through. It provides biblical answers to important questions and guides readers to seek comfort in God.

The book is written like a 30-day devotional, as it’s divided into 30 chapters titled Day One to Day 30. Each chapter includes a devotional reading, Bible verses, a prayer, and questions for reflection. A 110-page book obviously can’t delve into deep theology or cover every possible scenario of pain and suffering, but it does offer general advice that can be applied to your life and will hopefully be helpful.

The end of the book has a glossary of key words about pain and suffering, breaking them down into simple terms, plus a list of 10 questions about pain and suffering, with answers. So if you tend to pick up a book and flip from back to front like I do, you will find quick answers to your questions right there. But the chapters go into more detail with real-life examples and wisdom from the scriptures.

The author, Beth Broom, is the founder and director of Christian Trauma Healing Network, a nonprofit organization that equips Christian helpers to care for trauma survivors. So you can be confident that she cares about you, the reader, and understands how you feel. She also knows how to offer a gentle explanation when you seek an answer to the question, “What does the Bible have to say about my pain?”

10 Questions About Pain & Suffering is a unique and helpful resource for Christian families, homeschools, and church libraries. It’s a book that can be read alone, as a supplement to regular Bible study, or as a devotional to be discussed with family or a young adult group. We live in a broken world, and no one is immune from traumatic events. This book is a simple, practical guide to hope and healing.
