Synopsis

HE CALLS ME DAUGHTER tells the stories of women shaped by absent, distant, or broken fathers and how those wounds followed them into adulthood—influencing identity, self-worth, and their relationship with God. Through honest conversations, these women name the pain they carried for years and the questions they never felt safe to ask.

As each story unfolds, the film points to a different kind of Father—one who is present and faithful. In contrast to human failure, God meets His daughters in their brokenness, restores what was lost, and calls them into a clearer understanding of who they are. Viewers are invited to reflect on their own stories and consider what healing could look like by encountering the unwavering love of a Father who never leaves.

At the heart of the movie is an encounter with Jesus—whose love flows from the perfect Heavenly Father who sees, stops, and calls His daughters by name. HE CALLS ME DAUGHTER is an invitation to experience the love of a Father who does not withdraw—One who offers peace, belonging, and restoration.

HE CALLS ME DAUGHTER centers on a simple, powerful truth: A heavenly Father changes everything.

Review

Do you or someone you know have a father wound? I highly recommend this film for teens and adults!

One normally thinks of a father being a manly role model for his son. But a father is also important to his daughter. Every daughter needs affirmation from her dad.

Father is such an important word, and when it gets corrupted, it hurts more than anything.

There are so many women walking around with so much pain, and they’re anxious or depressed, but they don’t know where it comes from, and very often it has to do with a father wound in their heart.

We all long for a father to know us, to see us, to love us.

“I knew my dad loved me, but he let me down.” –Lynsi Snyder, In-and-Out Burger president

An absent father can be as bad as an abusive father.

Women need to have an emotional connection with their dad to feel cared for, valued, and loved. Longing for a father-daughter relationship, feeling unworthy, and afraid of being unloved, can lead them into bad relationships with men who are eventually going to leave them or hurt them, just like their father abandoned or abused them.

Moreover, if they go through life feeling unloved and unwanted, they may feel that God doesn’t care about them either. It even makes it hard to call God “Our Father.”

Nevertheless, true healing isn’t found in earthly relationships, but a relationship with our heavenly Father. A heavenly Father changes everything! Our heavenly Father says I love you, I made you, I want a relationship with you.

One of the most moving parts of the documentary comes from Priscilla, who courageously shares her personal story of transformation. She’s an example that if you don’t have a father figure in your family, working at a strip club may seem okay because it boosts self-esteem and makes you feel wanted, albeit in the wrong way. However, her testimony is a reminder that no matter how broken someone’s past may be, God’s love can rewrite the future.

I enjoyed the stand-up comedy segment with Chonda Pierce, which added some comic relief to a serious film with heavy themes. I also appreciated the frank and honest conversation she shared about her life with her father, and she offered some great advice about forgiveness and letting go.

“We stand so quick and ready to be the judge and jury for so many people, and that’s not our job.” –Chonda Pierce

It’s so important for a woman who’s been deeply wounded by her father to see how incredibly good God is. God is a perfect Father, and He has a plan for you as His daughter. God’s plan is sovereign, purposeful, and intentional. He can take the painful situations of our lives and use it for good.

God longs to show us how much He loves us. Ultimately, He draws us to Himself. He has adopted us as His children so that we can say I am the beloved of God.

“I will be a Father to you, and you shall be sons and daughters to me, says the Lord Almighty.” –2 Corinthians 6:18

So don’t worry, you’re never fatherless, and you’re not alone. You have a Father in Heaven who loves you intimately, who adores you so much that He cares about every detail in your life.

Your heavenly Father knows you, loves you, and wants to have a relationship with you. Your Heavenly Father will never leave you.

Your Father in Heaven does not see you as a curse, but as a blessing, and He delights to be in your presence. He loves you so much that He sent His only son to live and to die for you.

“See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God.” –1 John 1:3

HE CALLS ME DAUGHTER is an invitation to experience the love of a Father who does not abandon or abuse—instead, He offers peace, belonging, and restoration. That’s an amazing father!

I know that this documentary may bring up painful feelings in some. If this is you, I hope that hearing the personal stories of other women with similar experiences and then listening to the gospel message will leave you with a sense of healing and peace in your heart. God bless! Sincerely, Teri
