Review
DOT CONNER: WEBTECTIVE is a fun, family-friendly mystery adventure.
I never saw the original faith-based web series titled DOT CONNER: WEBTECTIVE that was produced by Huff Media Productions, did you? I’m glad they made it into a full-length feature film so now more people will know about it.
The movie starts out with a brief chase scene and classic spy music in Mission Impossible style. Parts of the movie also remind me of Spy Kids. There are some nice animated graphics throughout, all in keeping with the spy theme.
DOT CONNER: WEBTECTIVE follows an inquisitive young teenager as she grabs her notebook and dons her fedora to investigate questions about her Christian faith as if she were a detective solving a mystery.
Dot uses social media and technology while researching her cases. Dot also has a live stream where she does her webtective stuff and answers questions about the Bible.
The goal of this film is to teach sound biblical doctrine to kids in an entertaining way, while encouraging them to use available tools and resources to answer their own questions about God and His Word.
Anyway, it’s Dot’s first day of high school, but everything goes wrong. To top it off, her dad is missing.
Seems like Dot has a whole new type of case to crack!
She discovers cryptic clues, shadowy villains, and a larger unraveling mystery…
It’s fun to watch Dot and her two friends follow GPS coordinates as they go on a geocache hunt to a park, a museum, and a church.
They come across a cool obscure Baptist hymn from the 1970s, “God of Earth and Outer Space.” I love the lyrics!
But where is Dot’s Dad???
About halfway through the movie, the plot takes a major twist which gets pretty exciting.
There’s also a surreal scene with John Rhys-Davies. What does he keep he bantering on about???!!!
The two bumbling bad guys are kind of over the top ridiculous, but that’s okay, they’re still funny.
Along the way, Dot gets to practice her detective skills for real!
I like how while you’re watching the movie, you also get a little Bible study thrown in, with lessons that you can apply to your own life.
For example, Dot learns a lesson about obstruction – an obstruction is an obstacle or hindrance, something that gets in the way of accomplishing what you want to do.
Everything isn’t always going to go your way, but as Dot says, “I can trust God in all things, good or bad.” That’s what Dot Conner does in this movie.
It’s like Philippians 4:13 states, “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” This verse emphasizes the belief that through faith in Christ, believers can find strength and capability to face any challenge or circumstance in life.
It’s important to note that Christ doesn’t give us strength to control circumstances; He gives us strength to endure them. Big difference there.
So… we have a missing father who’s definitely a spy, cryptic clues left behind, and encounters with dangerous Russian thugs…
Will Dot and her friends be able to crack the case? Find out and see DOT CONNER: WEBTECTIVE in theaters September 19th!
Conclusion
DOT CONNER: WEBTECTIVE is not a bad way to spend an afternoon, it was a fun movie to watch and I rather enjoyed it! It has kind of a quirky and campy feel. It was filmed in Tennessee.
